Dental X-Rays in Pelham

Patients often ask why dental x-rays are necessary. While Dr. Moore does an excellent visual examination, there are areas in your mouth that are simply impossible to see such as between your teeth and beneath your gums. Catching these problems early using dental x-rays is important because by the time these little issues are visible, they may have become big, painful problems.

Periodontal Evaluation

Periodontal disease is extremely common, affecting about half of all Americans over the age of 30. It’s the leading cause of lost teeth in adults, and studies have shown a link between periodontal disease and a number of other serious systemic conditions including cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, and diabetes.

While many people refer to periodontal disease as simply gum disease, the truth is that this disease affects more than just your gums. As the disease progresses, it attacks both bone and gum tissue.

At Moore Family Dentistry, we take these concerns seriously, and take the time at every examination (including your free first examination) to evaluate the condition of your gums. If periodontal disease is present, we’ll create a treatment plan to address the problem. Otherwise, we’ll discuss prevention and maintenance cleanings to ensure your continued good health.

Oral Cancer Screenings

Oral cancer is a dangerous disease – mostly because often by the time it’s caught, it’s progressed to the point where it’s more difficult to treat. Regular oral cancer screenings at Moore Family Dentistry will help catch oral cancer in its earliest stages, when it’s still highly treatable.

Dr. Moore will thoroughly check all the soft tissues of your mouth, including your tongue, palate, gums, and tonsils, for any signs of cancerous or pre-cancerous changes. If you ever have a sore in your mouth that takes longer than two weeks to heal, call our office immediately to have it assessed. If any areas of concern are found, we’ll make arrangements for a biopsy.

While tobacco use and alcohol considerably increase your risk of developing oral cancer, even people who don’t smoke, chew, or drink are still at risk for this disease. Recently, oral cancer rates have started rising in younger people who do not have the typical risk factors for the condition. Everyone should receive a regular screening for oral cancer to catch developing disease before it’s too late.
