What is an Intraoral Camera?
X-rays provide us with valuable information, but give us a limited view of what’s going on in your mouth. Intraoral cameras are state-of-the-art diagnostic tools that we use to get more detailed information about your mouth and your oral health. We have chosen to invest in an intraoral camera because it shows us details of what is happening in your mouth that cannot be seen on an x-ray or with the naked eye.
The intraoral camera is a handheld unit that is about the size of a dental mirror. It has a built-in light source and acts as a miniature video camera. It has 25x magnification, which means that objects will appear 25 times larger than that viewed with the naked eye.
This capability is as important for you as it is for the doctor, because with it we can actually give you a very detailed “video tour” of your entire mouth. You see exactly what we see because we can display the images on a TV or computer monitor.
You will see details you’ve never seen before like worn or broken fillings, plaque deposits, cracked teeth, and abnormal wear. We can even print the image for you to take home!
When you can actually see what’s happening with your teeth, it is much easier for you to understand why we suggest certain treatments. We would be happy to give you a demonstration of the intraoral camera so you can see its amazing capabilities for yourself!
