What is periodontal disease?
At Moore Family Dentistry, we stress patient education because it’s important for you to be aware of the damage that results from oral health issues like periodontal disease. Periodontal disease (gum disease) is a bacterial infection of your gums and is a serious oral health concern. Without prompt treatment, periodontal disease can take a serious toll on the health of your teeth and gums.
All throughout your day bacteria are building up on your teeth and around your gum line, causing plaque to develop. Plaque is a film of bacteria that sticks to tooth enamel and lingers on oral tissue.
Of course, brushing and flossing is important because it clears away food debris that can cause bacteria to develop. However, at-home oral hygiene alone is not enough to clean your teeth thoroughly and prevent periodontal disease.
Some plaque remains on your teeth, and eventually hardens into a substance called tartar. If periodontal disease is not treated, it can advance and destroy gum tissue and the bone supporting your teeth and possibly lead to tooth loss.
