Do I need corrective jaw surgery?

If your upper and lower jaws are misaligned, it may cause discomfort, pain, and difficulty chewing and eating. Causes of jaw misalignment may include injury, birth defect, or differing growth rates between the upper and lower jaw. In some cases, you may require corrective jaw surgery.

One or more of the following symptoms may indicate that you may have misalignment of the jaws:

  • Protrusion of the jaw
  • An imbalanced facial appearance
  • Excessive joint pain, jaw pain, or headaches
  • Chronic dry mouth
  • Difficulty pressing your lips together

Pay us a visit and let us know about your symptoms. Our team can evaluate your oral health circumstance and determine whether or not you may need corrective jaw surgery.

We also treat patients with Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ). TMJ results from issues with the muscles surrounding and attached to the joint that connects the upper to the lower jaw.

While we prefer a conservative approach when it comes to treatment methods, we recognize that sometimes surgery is the best course of action. The correction of your jaw misalignment may make daily life more comfortable, and it could even improve your appearance. We may recommend surgery if we strongly believe that it will help prevent the development of serious problems in the future.
