What is TMJ?
It can be a challenge to understand TMJ since it is a complicated and often misunderstood disorder that affects people differently. Pain from a TMJ disorder can seriously affect the quality of your life, and at Moore Family Dentistry we have treatments that can help address the problem.
TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint, the joint on either side of your jaw, just in front of the ear, that allows the jaw to move up and down and side to side for biting, chewing, talking, yawning, and making facial expressions.
TMJ is also the term commonly used for temporomandibular joint disorders (also referred to as TMJD), which are conditions resulting in limited jaw movement and pain in the jaw and surrounding areas.
The temporomandibular joint is one of the body’s most complicated joints, and undergoes enormous amounts of pressure as we go about our daily activities of eating and talking.
Pain from TMJ does not have one particular source, and the cause is sometimes difficult to determine. It may be the result of injury, arthritis, stress, teeth grinding and clenching, and a number of medical conditions.
While millions of people suffer from TMJ pain, there currently is no known way of preventing this type of pain from occurring, but there are many of effective pain management options available. Please contact our Pelham dental office for more information. We can evaluate your situation and work with you to develop a treatment plan that best suits your needs.
